We’re excited to announce that FC Barcelona Coach and football legend Josep “Pep” Guardiola just became the latest addition to Qatar 2022’s team of ambassadors!

The bid team unveiled the news at a press conference in Barcelona, held on Thursday, 18 February. Football fans need no introduction to Guardiola, who stood at the helm of the FC Barcelona team that won the 2009 UEFA Champion’s League, the world’s most prestigious club trophy. A native of Catalonia, where Barcelona is located, Pep began coaching the team in 2008 after a long and storied career, including a stint with Barcelona’s legendary “Dream Team” during the 1990s.

Sami Al-Jaber Announced as a spokesperson

We’ve got BIG news!! We were so excited to finally announce legendary Saudi football player Sami Al Jaber as our ambassador.

He’s on board with the Qatar 2022 vision – to show the world the Middle Eastern passion for the game and to host an event that will inspire millions around the world.

Together we can all make history. Sami retired last spring after almost 20 years spent playing football. He’s scored 44 goals for his country – that includes three goals at four consecutive World Cup finals!

He’s also the first player from Asia to score at the event for two consecutive years! Sami knows what dreaming big and making it all happen is all about. We’re excited to have him join us. Welcome to the team! You’ll be seeing a lot more of Sami in the coming months as we slowly reveal our plans.

Asian Football Confederation Awards

We’re busy spreading the word and, clearly, the work never stops.

Part of our team is in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Awards ceremony. We’re showing our support to all the Asian talents and the work they do with their countries, fans and clubs.

Our Bid is all about bringing together fans, players and different football loving countries, so this is definitely one event we’re happy to be a part of. We’ll also have a booth at Soccerex 2009 in South Africa from the end of November to early December. International media, football legends, top football clubs and pretty much the entire football community – from suppliers, to players, to key decision-makers – are getting together for this event.

You can bet we’re going to be there in full force to spread the word about Qatar 2022. This is the world’s biggest football exhibition and we’re really looking forward to letting everyone know why Qatar is the ultimate host country for the 2022 World Cup. We’re definitely going to make some waves, so make sure to look for us in the news.

Fan Festival a huge success!

The Fan Fest before the big England-Brazil match-up was a hit!! Were you there?

We had a blast making this event happen and a big thanks goes to YOU for making it such a huge success! We had different villages set up – giving you the sights and sounds of England, Brazil and this beautiful country we call home. For those who are wondering how huge it really was – we had about the size of three football fields reserved just for you.

There were three separate entertainment areas, that we setup like villages. The Brazilian one had a Copacabana beach backdrop. Fans lived it up with a traditional Brazilian Batucada drum band, and those who wanted a piece of the action played beach soccer and tried their skills at the soccer speed shooting and target machines.

Those in the mood for soccer Playstation or interactive games headed to The England Village, complete with a virtual backdrop of Big Ben, Buckingham Palace Guards and music from the Bootleg Beatles. And of course, we could not hold this sort of event without a touch of Qatari hospitality. The Qatar Village included a falconry exhibition and henna painting and some fans even got the chance to show their love for the Qatar 2022 Bid by writing and recording their messages of support in the dedicated space.

If you’re kicking yourself for sitting this Fan Festival out, don’t fret. The Qatar 2022 bid has a lot still in store. Be sure to check back here for all the details.
